There is something fascinating about looking up the actual meaning of words to get a better understanding of the root and the context of why a specific term is used the way it is. A look into different dictionaries allowed me to discover a beautiful definition of happiness: "A state of well-being and contentment". Isn't that amazing? That explains humanity's constant pursuit of happiness. Who doesn't want to be in a constant state of contentment? That sounds like a great place to be in. Something that can only be positive and that will make life easier and more enjoyable. But have we really grasped the meaning and essence of happiness? How do we get there and most importantly, how do we stay there?
The mistake most people make is looking for happiness in places: material things, personal achievements or other people. The problem with that is that this world was not meant to last forever but only for a certain period of time. Which means that something that could give you happiness now, might be gone tomorrow. In consequence, we can never attain a constant state of happiness because the circumstances are working against us? I wouldn't look at it that way, instead, I would look at it from the source-perspective. The source of your happiness will determine its longevity. Happiness needs to come from within you - from God with you.
We all know the feeling of euphoria. That state of pure joy, like we are on top of the world. Invincible. Unstoppable. The same way we are all familiar with sober moments of feeling down or sad. There is no shame in that. On the contrary, I believe that what most of us struggle with is not knowing how to deal with difficult situations. The problem is not the situation at hand or how we feel about it, but our reaction to it. Trying to suppress your feelings and forcefully replacing them with a superficial version of happiness is not the answer. Neither is trying to look for ways to ignore the fact that you are facing challenges at all.
Going back to the source, the word of God, and seeking your answer there, is! "Seek your happiness in the LORD, and he will give you your heart's desire." Psalms 37:4 GNB
Once you have unlocked the key to real happiness you will not have a worry in the world anymore. Occasionally you will still encounter emotions like sadness or agitation but it will always be accompanied by a state of calmness and inner peace. The constant in your life will be the conviction that it is well and you are good. Because you are. Finally, you will be free from worrying and being anxious. Instead, you will give praise because you know that even if it takes a while, God has already taken care of it on your behalf.
It is time to stop chasing happiness in the wrong places! Your happiness is already in you, only waiting for you to uncover and embrace it.
