YOLO - The best time of your life!

Do you remember YOLO? You Only Live Once. The buzzword that was all over Social Media. People wrote it on their timelines, used it as hashtags, made videos about it and even wore t-shirts with the expression. YOLO was everywhere. Yet, was it clear to everyone what it really meant? It seemed to be the anthem of the younger generation. A generation that said now was their time to have fun and live life to the fullest. This caused many to frown upon this movement, because it also seemed the perfect excuse for doing whatever you wanted without thinking about the consequences or being apologetic. I must admit I was one of those "frowners". I just could not comprehend how one could live life without thinking about tomorrow. One day I had an epiphany.

I thought about life, about purpose and happiness. What if we really lived like there was no tomorrow? Would we make more of every moment we have to make it count and memorable? What if someone would approach you and ask you about the happiest moment in your life? Would you think about a moment in the past or look into the future and say that it was yet to come? Then I realized the answer to that question should always be "right now!" Simply because we really don't know tomorrow. We should embrace today as if there was no tomorrow by venturing into new things, taking risks and making use of new opportunities. People often think that if you live today as if there was no tomorrow, it will just be an excuse to do all the bad things. Let's take a moment to look at it from another perspective. What if this was an opportunity to actually do all the good things? For example, what if you wouldn't wait until you had millions in your bank account until you gave to charity or back to your local community? What if you just contributed with the means you had right now? The small things are often the things that make the big difference. What if you didn't wait until you were "older" and "more experienced" to step out and make an impact? What if you didn't wait until you had furthered your education or taken the next step in your career to branch out into a new business undertaking? Why wouldn't we just do all the right things right now, work on them and keep planning ahead with the consciousness that tomorrow might not come?

Now, timing and proper planning is everything. It is important and the only wise way to approach things. But there is a big difference between planning and stalling or being afraid to make a move. When you plan, you are actually already working on the things you want to do in the future. Making the best of each moment and stepping out in faith does not equal being foolish and venturing out without a proper plan in place. It means that you use your time wisely and remove the shackles of standstill to do something new. Taking off the cloak of fear that has given us the false idea of "I have time, I could just do it tomorrow."

"13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them." - James 4:13-17 (NIV).

The truth is everything we do today is in faith and by God's grace. Take that gift and work on being the best version of yourself right now and don't wait until tomorrow. I wouldn't call it YOLO but "The best time of your life is now!"
